The checklist

1. Move out of immediate danger if you can do so safely. Turn on your hazard lights and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
2. Check on everyone involved. Do not delay emergency care to collect information.
3. Document the scene. Photograph vehicle positions, damage, license plates, road conditions, signs, and the surrounding area when it is safe.
4. Exchange the basics. Collect names, contact information, driver's license information, vehicle details, and insurance information.
5. Write down what you remember. Note the time, location, direction of travel, weather, witnesses, and any report number.
6. Be factual. Describe what you observed without guessing about damage, repair cost, or fault.
7. Before driving away, look carefully. If the vehicle feels unsafe, leaks fluid, has warning lights, or has damaged steering, wheels, lights, or safety systems, arrange towing.
